Meet our founder

Gertrude Esohe Ekhator, a dynamic and visionary professional from Edo State in the South-South region of Nigeria, has dedicated her career to public health, social welfare, and policy development. With an impressive academic and professional background that spans law, social work, and healthcare, Gertrude is an ardent advocate for the rights and well-being of marginalized populations. Her work has impacted countless lives, and she strives for change at the community and policy levels.

Gertrude's formative years in Benin City, Edo State, were marked by the poignant struggles of families battling poverty, inadequate healthcare, and limited education. These early experiences instilled in her a deep empathy for the plight of marginalized communities and fueled her unwavering determination to bring about change. With a profound commitment to making a difference, she embarked on a journey of academic excellence, earning a Diploma in Social Work from the University of Benin. Her quest for knowledge and understanding led her to further her education, culminating in a Bachelor of Law (LL.B) and a Master of Laws (LL.M) from the same institution and her Barrister at Law (BL) from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja.

With a solid educational background, Gertrude's career began to take shape in a unique blend of social work and law, equipping her with a unique skill set to navigate complex legal frameworks while providing compassionate support to those in need. Her role as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Edo State on Gender and Social Welfare Development has placed her at the forefront of policy formulation and implementation to protect vulnerable groups' rights and welfare.

Gertrude has been a tireless advocate for women's rights, gender equality, and social justice, using her position to champion causes promoting the well-being of women, children, and persons with disabilities. Her influence has initiated numerous social welfare programs to provide healthcare, nutritional support, and emotional well-being services for marginalized communities. She has led public awareness campaigns, organized health outreaches, and facilitated access to essential services for those in need.

Driven by a desire to see a Nigeria where every citizen has access to quality healthcare regardless of their background or social standing, Gertrude's work has extended beyond governmental policies. In 2023, she founded the Gertrude Care Foundation. This community-based organization provides holistic care and support to widows, survivors of sexual exploitation, women with sexually transmitted diseases, and those affected by severe poverty across Edo State. Under her leadership, this agency has brought hope and healing to countless women in remote and underserved communities, empowering them with the resources and support they need to rebuild their lives.

Gertrude's philosophy is rooted in the belief that true empowerment comes from preparing people with the tools they need to thrive independently. She has spearheaded community outreach programs through her agency that provide vulnerable women with medical, emotional, and nutritional support. Her passion for social welfare has led her to partner with healthcare providers, NGOs, and government agencies, ensuring those most in need receive the care and attention they deserve. For her, every life touched is a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and resilience.

However, Gertrude is not one to rest on her laurels. Her vision goes beyond providing immediate care and support. She is committed to addressing the systemic issues contributing to Nigeria's healthcare disparities. Her goal is to become a strong voice in national policymaking, pushing for reforms to make healthcare more accessible and equitable across the country. With her extensive experience in law, social work, and community service, she aims to influence health policies that prioritize the needs of the underserved and create a more inclusive healthcare system for all Nigerians.

Gertrude envisions a future where her efforts will contribute to establishing a sophisticated healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria that serves all citizens regardless of their location or financial capacity. She believes the key to achieving this is evidence-based policymaking, considering the unique challenges different communities face nationwide. Her advocacy for healthcare reforms is not just about providing services but also about building a system that is responsive, efficient, and sustainable.

Gertrude's journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment to service. Her determination to see Nigeria become a country where everyone can live a life of dignity and access essential healthcare drives her forward. She has earned a reputation as a compassionate leader who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get involved in the hard work of community service. Whether advocating for better health policies at the state level, providing direct support through her foundation, or mentoring young women to become leaders in their own right, Gertrude's impact is felt far and wide.

Looking ahead, Gertrude is focused on expanding her reach and influence to the national level. She is working towards becoming a prominent figure in federal healthcare policy development, where she can use her voice and expertise to shape policies that protect the health and welfare of all Nigerians. Her dream is to see a healthcare system that is not just accessible but also affordable and of high quality, ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind.

Gertrude Esohe Ekhator is more than just a public health advocate; she is a beacon of hope, resilience, and transformation. She is dedicated to uplifting those who are often forgotten and advocating for a Nigeria where health and social welfare are seen as fundamental rights rather than privileges. As she continues on her path, she remains driven by the belief that actual change begins with one person daring to make a difference, and for many in Edo State and beyond, that person is Gertrude.
